Day 8 of the federal election campaign

Movements, announcements and stuff-ups from Day 8 of the federal election campaign.

FEDERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN: DAY 8

WHERE THE LEADERS CAMPAIGNED:

* Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull: Briefly in Fremantle to appear with a ship. Later in Darwin to appear with local MP Natasha Griggs.

* Labor leader Bill Shorten: In Geelong and the safe Labor seat of Corio.

WHAT THE COALITION TALKED ABOUT:

The use of Australian steel in new offshore patrol boats as an example of why advanced manufacturing is good for the country.

WHAT LABOR TALKED ABOUT:

A $59 million assistance for workers made jobless by the departure of car makers.

WHAT'S MADE NEWS:

* A Greens plan to enshrine weekend penalty rates in law and Labor's convoluted response.

* The PM's apparent snub of voters in western Sydney has not done the government any harm, a new opinion poll shows.

* Kevin Rudd backs Bill Shorten, eventually.

* Catholic bishops urge politicians to think about the "thrown-away people" during the election campaign, including those who do not want the definition of marriage to change.

THE LATEST POLLS

* Malcolm Turnbull has the edge over his political opponents in the trust and competent leader stakes, the ABC Vote Compass survey finds.

* A Galaxy poll of western Sydney voters has the coalition nicely clear of Labor in Lindsay, but the margin is narrower in other marginal NSW seats.

THEY SAID WHAT?

"This is not an election where it's the top half of the cup versus the bottom half of the cup. Malcolm Turnbull has decided to back the very top, the froth of the cappuccino."

- Labor campaign spokesman Tony Burke fronts the media, possibly before having his own morning coffee.

TWEETED:

"Gee. That was quick. @ColinBarnett didn't even get a meeting."

- @dan_pastorelli on the PM's rushed visit to WA.
