Day three snapshot of the fifth Ashes Test

A snapshot of day three of the fifth Ashes Test in Sydney.

* Score: Australia 4-479 (Usman Khawaja 171, Shaun Marsh 98 not out) England 346 (Joe Root 83, Dawid Malan 62)

* Man of the moment: Usman Khawaja. After resuming on 91, he turned the screws on day two. He fell just short of his highest Test score but put Australia in a dominant position. He was eventually undone after coming down the pitch at Mason Crane to be stumped by Jonny Bairstow. It was a much-needed big score and his first Test ton in over a year.

* Key moment: When Khawaja was on 132 just before lunch, Crane thought he had snared his first Test wicket when he seemingly trapped the Australian batsman lbw. After England reviewed the umpire's not out decision, replays showed Crane had overstepped his mark and it was ruled a no ball. It was subsequently revealed the ball was tracking to hit middle stump. Khawaja went on to make 171.

* Stat of the day: 2 - that's where Steve Smith stands on the all-time list for Test batting averages for players with more than 10 Tests. The Aussie skipper's 63.75 sits only behind the great Don Bradman's legendary figures of 99.94.

* Summary: Australia hold a 133-run lead and will look to grind England into the dirt on Sunday. Temperatures of 40C are forecast for Sydney and it's expected they'll look to leave England in the field to bake. Steve Smith, David Warner and Shaun and Mitchell Marsh have all brought up half centuries. Shaun Marsh is on 98 not out and will have a chance to bring up his second century of the summer in the morning. Mitchell Marsh is on 63.

* Quote of the day: "I thought it was fairly close when they reviewed it and when I saw the no-ball I thought 'happy days'." - Usman Khawaja on his no-ball reprieve.
