Australian world No.3 Jason Day has announced mother Dening has undergone successful surgery in Columbus, Ohio on Friday.

The Day camp released a statement detailing Dening, who was diagnosed with lung cancer at the beginning of 2017, is resting after "successfully undergoing surgery" at The James Cancer Institute at the Ohio State University Medical Center.

"Mum and our entire family would like to thank all of our friends and supporters who have reached out in an incredible outpouring of love during such a difficult period. We are praying for her recovery," Day said in the statement.

An emotional Day withdrew mid-round from the World Golf Championships-Match Play on Wednesday in Austin, Texas.

Day has not yet confirmed whether he will play at the Masters starting on April 6.

The 29-year-old revealed the emotional stress had impacted his US PGA Tour results, with the Queenslander losing his 47-week reign of world No.1 to Dustin Johnson in February courtesy of lacklustre results that include a best finish of fifth place.

"Emotionally it's been wearing on me for a while. And I know my mum says not to let it get to me, but it really has," Day said.

He also lost father Alvyn to stomach cancer when Day was 12.

"It's been very, very emotional, as you can tell. I've already gone through it once with my dad. And I know how it feels. And it's hard enough to see another one go through it, as well," said Day earlier this week.
