Daly Cherry-Evans has revealed how he pleaded with teammates to show some character in a behind-the posts address which prompted their comeback win over the Sydney Roosters.
The Sea Eagles came from 18-4 down to not just save the match but possibly their NRL season at Lottoland on Sunday.
The 36-18 victory propelled them back into top four contention after finding their top eight hopes on the brink after a nightmare fortnight in which they conceded 92 points.
Roosters playmaker Luke Keary crossed on the half-hour mark to give his side a 14-point lead, prompting Cherry-Evans and his fellow senior players to bring the team together in the in-goal area.
"We spoke a lot about our character as a side and facing adversity," Cherry-Evans said.
"The last two weeks had obviously put us under a lot of adversity.
"Eighteen points in the first half, we felt like it could go one of two ways. We spoke about it and we did address it under the sticks there.
"It's fantastic to see the whole team stick together and fight their way through it."
The Sea Eagles responded with Tom Trbojevic - who was celebrating his 50th NRL match - scoring either side of half time with Trent Barrett's side running in five unanswered tries to take a very important two points.
Trbojevic's try before halftime was amongst the most important of his career to date considering the context of their season.
While they remained in seventh with the result, it put them just two points behind fourth-placed Cronulla and opened up a two-point gap over ninth-placed St George Illawarra.
"We knew we were still in the game and we knew we were matching them," Trbojevic said.
"We just needed to get momentum back on our side and we did that through energy.
"We started off through the middle and we got opportunities through that, to pounce on those opportunities like we did was pleasing."
