De Kock smashes records for Proteas

South Africa's Quinton de Kock etched his name into cricket's record books with a sensational display of hitting against Australia in Centurion on Friday.

Not since Herschelle Gibbs' innings in a remarkable one-day match in Johannesburg in 2006 had a South African batsman dominated Australia like this.

Quinton de Kock's 113-ball 178 at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday eclipsed Gibbs' 175 from that unforgettable clash at the Wanderers 10 years ago as the highest individual score in an ODI between the two nations.

In 2006 Gibbs' laid the platform as South Africa successfully chased Australia's 434 a decade ago.

On Friday the target was a more modest 295 but such was de Kock's dominance another 400-plus run chase wouldn't have been unthinkable.

De Kock, 23, admits that amazing day at the Wanderers isn't actually a match stuck in his mind, given he had other cricketing commitments to attend to.

"I remember that, I had a club game," de Kock said.

"I had to watch the highlights, I didn't get to watch any of it. That was unfortunate."

While de Kock's mighty innings, which included 11 sixes and 16 fours, was a memorable one it didn't dislodge Gary Kirsten's 188 against the United Arab Emirates in the 1996 World Cup as the highest ODI score by a South African.

Not that the left-hander was too upset to fall short of that milestone.

"I'm not bothered about records," he said.

"I'm just here to win the games. That's the most important thing. That's all it comes down to, records are just add-ons I guess."

QUINTON DE KOCK'S RECORD BREAKING KNOCK

* 178 is highest individual score in an ODI between South Africa and Australia

* De Kock has taken the least amount of matches (65) in ODI history to score 11 centuries

* De Kock joins Indian pair Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli as only players to score 11 ODI centuries at the age of 23
