Still buzzing from getting a driver's licence, Australian tennis star Alex de Minaur is now on a collision course with Rafael Nadal at the Brisbane International.

The Australian No.1 is in line to face the 17-time grand slam champion in the Brisbane quarter-finals after Saturday's draw.

But that is not the only reason why Brisbane seventh seed de Minaur is revved up after returning to the event that launched his breakout 2018 season.

The 19-year-old is stoked he finally passed his driver's test during a Christmas break at his training base in Spain.

He may not be able to legally get behind the wheel on Australian roads but de Minaur hopes to again be in the driver's seat in Brisbane where a tantalising showdown with Nadal awaits.

"I was fortunate enough to have a week and a half off (in off-season) so I spent all that time and effort getting my driver's licence in Spain," de Minaur beamed.

"I don't (have an Australian licence), that takes a bit longer. But in Spain I just had to pass my theory then pass my driving test and it was all good in a week and a half."

It was yet another 2018 achievement for the breakout star.

The teenager reached the 2018 Brisbane semi-finals as an unheralded wildcard but finished the season as Australia's top-ranked player, soaring from world No.208 to 31.

He was crowned the ATP's newcomer of the year and shared the John Newcombe Medal, leapfrogging dual grand slam quarter-finalist Nick Kyrgios in the rankings.

It's a hard act to follow.

But de Minaur reckoned lining up against world No.2 Nadal in Brisbane would be difficult to beat.

It would be the second time they have clashed after the Australian youngster lost in straight sets to the Spanish great in 2018 Wimbledon round of 32 on centre court.

"It was a pretty incredible experience for me, so many things to learn," de Minaur said.

"Just being out there on court with these guys, the next time you know what to expect.

"Hopefully I will be ready but we will see what happens."

De Minaur wasn't getting ahead of himself, admitting he faced a tough first round opponent in Australian wildcard Alexei Popyrin.

If successful, de Minaur would then play the winner of the all-Australian first round clash between Jordan Thompson and wildcard Alex Bolt before the daunting Nadal challenge.

Top seed Nadal has a first round bye before facing the winner of Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's clash with a qualifier.

Not that De Minaur planned on spinning his wheels in Brisbane.

"I have put in the hard yards for a big 2019," he warned.
