Debbie response has been swift: Suncorp

Suncorp says half of the claims it received in the wake of Cyclone Debbie have been settled and many homes have been completely repaired.

Suncorp says it has finalised over half the claims lodged by its customers after Cyclone Debbie, and more than 1,500 home repairs have been completed.

Suncorp says it is finalising around 100 claims a day in the wake of the cyclone that hit the Queensland coast in March and caused widespread flooding in Queensland and northern NSW, leaving an overall insurance bill of over $1 billion.

The insurer said its response to those affected by the devastation has been twice as fast as for Cyclone Yasi in 2011.

Of the 18,921 claims received by Suncorp, 9,845 have been finalised, including 7,777 full or partial cash settlements.

Suncorp received claims for 9,002 repairs, and 1,512 of those have been completed.

The insurer has also settled thousands of customers who have opted to organise their own repairs, a spokesperson said, meaning the number of homes insured by Suncorp that have been repaired is higher than that figure.

While no figures are available to compare the rate of repairs for Debbie against those in the aftermath of Yasi, most damaged homes are in an advanced state of repair, considering the generally enhanced response time, the spokesperson said.

The company's costs associated with Cyclone Debbie and the impact of claims received will be included in its full year financial results, to be released on August 3.
