Debbie shuts Ayr to Proserperine schools

The Queensland premier has ordered the closure of schools between Ayr and Proserpine on Monday as the state prepares for Cyclone Debbie.

The Queensland premier has ordered the closure of schools between Ayr and Proserpine on Monday. (AAP)

Schools between Ayr and Proserpine will be closed from Monday as high winds from Tropical Cyclone Debbie hit the area.

Debbie is expected to cross the north Queensland coast early on Tuesday morning as a category 4 cyclone.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says further school closures may be announced, and a detailed list would be issued later on Sunday.
