Debutant rescues Vics in Qld Shield clash

Victoria have reached 2-147 at stumps on day two of their Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland at the MCG, where bat still dominates the pink ball.

For the second day in a row at the MCG, an unheralded batsman has made playing the pink ball look like a breeze.

Victoria reached 2-147 at the halfway point of their day-night Sheffield Shield clash with Queensland, thanks largely to Travis Dean's 81 not out on debut.

The Bulls resumed at 4-298 on day two, eventually posting a first-innings total of 444.

Ben Cutting was on a hat-trick and ended Thursday's second session with a double-wicket maiden.

Dean and Peter Handscomb steadied for the hosts after dinner, sharing an unbeaten 116-run stand.

Dean was controversially picked by Victorian selectors instead of Australia's Twenty20 captain Aaron Finch, who blasted an unbeaten double-century on Thursday for the Cricket Australia XI against New Zealand.

The 23-year-old's impressive knock came a day after Scott Henry, who was delisted by NSW in the off-season, scored 141 in his first game for Queensland.

The match in Melbourne has been a reasonably dull affair with bat dominating ball.

None of the pacemen has been able to conjure the sort of magic that Mitchell Starc demonstrated this week in Adelaide.

There has been minimal seam and swing movement from both sides, John Hastings suggesting after day one that the pink ball made for some "boring" cricket.

Peter Siddle, who is expected to be named in Australia's 12-man Test squad on Friday, continued his solid yet unspectacular recent form.

Siddle finished with 0-57 from 23 overs, while James Pattinson snared only one wicket in 24 overs.

Siddle demonstrated trademark control but failed to create a breakthrough, as was the case when he recorded figures of 0-34 from 13 overs in last weekend's tour game at Manuka Oval.

Hastings was the pick of the Bushrangers' bowlers, grabbing 4-59 from 34 overs.

Cutting, used as a first-change bowler after Usman Khawaja handed the new rock to James Hopes, trapped Rob Quiney lbw then skittled the stumps to dismiss Marcus Stoinis.
