Tasmania have seemingly unearthed a new star with batsman Charlie Wakim posting a massive century to help the Tigers take a stranglehold of their Sheffield Shield match at Adelaide Oval against South Australia.

With one day remaining the home side still trail by 78 runs with eight second-innings wickets in hand.

It could have been much worse for SA who bounced back in the final session after another gruelling day in the Adelaide heat, thanks to counter-attacking knocks from unbeaten duo Jake Weatherald (64) and Travis Head (45).

Jackson Bird (2-30) made a double early breakthrough, before Weatherald and Head responded with an aggressive 116-run partnership that carried the strugglers to 2-132 at the close on Monday.

But the day belonged Wakim who, in scoring 160, posted the highest score by a Tasmanian Shield debutant in the first innings of a match.

Wakim's score is eclipsed only by 167 not out scored by Michael Bevan in the second innings of his debut for South Australia in 1989-90.

The 27-year-old played a measured and disciplined 333-ball innings, scoring 16 fours and offering only one half-chance to silly mid-on when he was in the 90s.

Wakim was eventually dismissed by seamer Joe Mennie, caught by Travis Head at mid-off.

Ben McDermott chimed in with a whirlwind 63 off 67 balls as Tasmania, after resuming on 3-238, were eventually bowled out for 467.

Such was the Redbacks desperation, nine bowlers were tried before their seam trio ripped through the tail with the new ball.

Australian Test captain Tim Paine was one the Tigers' lower-order that failed to fire, being caught behind for 14.
