Deep magnitude 7.8 quake hits off Fiji

A deep magnitude 7.8 earthquake has struck 105 kilometres east-southeast of Suva, Fiji, with no destructive Pacific-wide tsunami expected.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has hit 105 kilometres east-southeast of Suva, Fiji, at a depth of 608 km, the US Geological Survey says.

The measure has been revised downward from an initial magnitude 8.1 reading by USGS.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said no destructive Pacific-wide tsunami was expected, and there was no tsunami threat to Hawaii.

New Zealand's Emergency Management Ministry said there was no tsunami threat to New Zealand following the earthquake.
