Dees count AFL injury toll

Melbourne tall Jake Spencer and second-gamer Tim Smith are set for long spells on the sidelines after sustaining injuries in their AFL loss to Richmond.

Back-up Melbourne ruck Jake Spencer looks set for a long spell on the sidelines after scans confirmed damage to the AFL tall's shoulder.

Spencer was hurt in Melbourne's loss to Richmond on Anzac Day eve, watching on from the sidelines as the Demons faded out of the match.

His club will likely have to get by with a makeshift ruck division until at least the round 11 bye given All Australian ruck Max Gawn is already out with a serious hamstring issue.

Melbourne football boss Josh Mahoney said Spencer - who was hurt while playing just his 37th game in nine seasons - would probably go under the knife.

"Jake received a knock to his AC joint early in the game last night and was ruled out prior to halftime," he said.

"He had scans (Tuesday) which showed damage to the AC joint.

"He will consult a surgeon (Wednesday) with the most likely option being surgery later in the week."

The club's website suggested a lay-off of six to seven weeks was likely, meaning a return around the club's traditional Queen's Birthday fixture.

Jack Watts and Sam Frost have been mooted as stand-in rucks for the Demons.

Second-gamer Tim Smith was also hospitalised in the 13-point loss to the Tigers.

"Tim was taken to hospital at halftime during last night's match after a knee to his ribs," Mahoney said.

"Investigations have shown a fractured rib and punctured lung. He will stay in hospital over the next few days."

In better news for the club, promising midfielder Christian Petracca has been cleared of serious damage after a knee knock and will be considered for next Sunday's match with Essendon.
