Demons' Oliver, Blues fan have AFL spat

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin has defended Clayton Oliver after the midfielder had an animated exchange with a Carlton fan.

Given he was happy to take on former Test cricketer Damien Martyn, it is probably no surprise that Clayton Oliver would argue with a Carlton fan.

But the wisdom of what Oliver did is another matter and what was said is yet to be determined.

The AFL appears certain to look into Oliver's spat with the fan on the MCG boundary fence, during the second term of Sunday's match.

Video shows the Melbourne player and the fan having a brief, animated exchange.

It comes a fortnight after Oliver fell to the ground when West Coast's Will Schofield made high contact.

Martyn questioned the incident on social media and Oliver did not hold back with his retort, bringing up a dismissal lowlight from the Test batsman's career.

Sunday's incident is the latest involving Melbourne players as commentary continues about the culture at the emerging club.

Demons coach Simon Goodwin said he would talk to Oliver.

"I don't have all the information about what that looks like - once again, a young player learning a behaviour," he said.

"I will have a look at it and chat to Clayton.

"Clearly, Clayton isn't going to react to something unnecessarily, so let's wait and get all the information on the table before we start criticising people."

Oliver was high among Melbourne's best in their eight-point win, shouldering plenty of added work in their injury-depleted midfield.

"The character of the kid shows what he's about - he just continues to play the game to a high level in the areas we love," Goodwin said.

"He's a quality person and a quality kid who loves the contest and I thought today he was very, very good.

"He was outstanding."
