Melbourne have ruled out attacker Dean Kent from the club's first AFL final in a dozen years but Dom Tyson could play with a fractured arm.

Kent won't play against Geelong in the September 7 elimination final because of a shoulder injury.

But Tyson and co-captain Jack Viney, who has missed the past seven weeks because of a toe injury, remain in the selection frame for the knockout final.

Tyson was hurt in Sunday's win against GWS and had surgery that night to insert a plate into this arm.

"He has pulled up really well," Melbourne's elite performance manager Dave Misson said in a statement on Tuesday.

"It's going to be how it tracks day-to-day. It's a little bit about pain management and functionality but we think Dom's going to have a run and a bit of a kick on Saturday.

"And we hope he'll do most of training next Tuesday and potentially be available."

Viney would also train on Saturday to press his selection claims.

"His preparation has all been about being available for the first AFL final ... he will train normally with a view to play," Misson said.

But Kent would be sidelined for two to three weeks.

"It was a pretty solid AC joint injury ... we'll just be assessing him as we go, he won't need surgery at this stage," Misson said.
