Australian cycling star Rohan Dennis has crashed out of the last stage of the Eneco Tour, ending his chances of the overall win.
Dennis, who was the overall tour leader, suffered cuts and bruises in the crash.
He is a favourite for the individual time trial at next month's world road titles in Qatar and the severity of his injuries will become clear in the next couple of days.
While Dennis' up and down year suffered another setback, compatriot Chloe Hosking continued her preparations for the worlds by winning the GP Beghelli one-day race in Italy.
Heavy rain made conditions treacherous for the seventh and final stage of the Eneco Tour in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Dennis crashed with 50km left and he eventually abandoned.
"He went down on his right side and suffered multiple abrasions to his arm and leg," BMC team doctor Dario Spinelli told the cyclingnews website.
"There does not appear to be any other serious injuries and he should be fine after a couple of days.
"We'll know more in the next two days when we see how he pulls up."
Dennis took the race lead by winning the stage-two individual time trial, showing he is on target for the world championships.
After losing the lead to Peter Sagan in stage four, Dennis took it back when BMC won the stage-five team time trial.
Norwegian rider Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) won the last stage and Dutchman Niki Terpstra (Etixx Quick-Step) finished second to take the overall win.
While Dennis has had some strong results this season, he has battled illness.
Dennis was also headed to a medal in the road time trial at the Rio Olympics when a broken aerobar meant he had to change bikes and the Australian finished fifth.
Meanwhile, Hosking won the 79km GP Beghelli in a bunch sprint.
The Australian has had the Qatar worlds as a major focus this year.
"I just wanted to practise my sprint, obviously, leading into worlds," the Wiggle High5 rider said.
"I felt really good so obviously it's' a huge confidence boost now three weeks out from Doha."
