P - Australia's Rohan Dennis appears on track to finish runner-up in the Tour of California.

Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe covered every attack by other contenders in Saturday's penultimate stage to maintain a 16-second lead over Dennis going into Sunday's flat final stage.

Dennis had a further 22-second gap back to third-placed BMC teammate Brent Brookwater (US).

Norway's Alexander Kristoff followed an impressive ride by his Katusha teammates, then outsprinted Peter Sagan - the most successful rider in the race's history - to win Saturday's stage in a bunch sprint.

Sagan, already a two-time stage winner this year, was second for his Tinkoff team. Danny Von Poppel of Team Sky finished third.

In the women's race, reigning Olympic champion Marianne Vos of the Netherlands outsprinted American Coryn Rivera and Sweden's Emma Johansson to capture their 69-mile third stage through Sonoma County wine country.
