Substitute Memphis Depay spared the Netherlands blushes on Sunday with a second-half brace for a 3-1 win in World Cup qualifying against minnows Luxembourg.

Veteran Arjen Robben had put the Dutch ahead in the 36th, but 130th-ranked Luxembourg levelled on the stroke of halftime with a penalty from Maxime Chanot.

Manchester United's Depay then came on for the second half, headed the second in the 58th and wrapped up matters with an 84th-minute free-kick.

The Dutch improved to seven points from four games in Group A, tied with Sweden who lost 2-1 at leaders France (10) on Friday.

Bulgaria have six points after holding off second-bottom Belarus 1-0.
