Water from Victoria's latest desalination plant order is starting to flow into Melbourne's storages.

The largest ever order of 125 gigalitres was placed earlier this year and would start to be delivered to Cardinia Reservoir from Tuesday and continue progressively over the year.

The water will contribute 6.9 per cent of the city's storages, which currently sit at 49.8 per cent, close to their lowest level since 2011, after the Millennium Drought.
