Former prime minister Tony Abbott believes the European migration crisis will ease once Islamic State extremists are destroyed.

"It's more important than ever that this death cult be destroyed at the source and I think it is important that people are prepared to take the risks," Mr Abbott told Sydney radio 2GB on Tuesday.

He welcomed the US move to put its special forces on the ground in the Middle East.
