Two suspected people smugglers have appeared in a Darwin court accused of helping to cause more than $400,000 damage during a riot at the Northern Territory's immigration detention centre.

Joni Balu, 18, and Hariyanto Bin Seneman, 29, have been held in detention, without charge, for up to five months under the Migration Act as suspected people smugglers.

The two Indonesian men are alleged to have been among a group of about 120 suspected people smugglers who set mattresses on fire and brandished poles on a roof at the Northern Immigration Detention Centre in in Darwin last month.

Balu and Seneman have been charged with damaging commonwealth property.

It is not yet known whether charges will be laid against other people involved in the riots.

Commonwealth prosecutor Mark McCarthy and Legal Aid lawyer Matt Hubber on Monday both asked that the matter be adjourned to ensure the court dealt with the damage offences at the same time as the people smuggling charges, which are yet to be laid against the men.

The court heard Balu and Seneman will be transferred to a detention facility in Melbourne.

Magistrate Tanya Fong Lim adjourned the matter until October 25.
