The Federal Opposition has seized on new documents showing the cost of running Australia's detention network has increased by more than $600 million in the past two years.

More asylum seekers are also being hospitalised and attempting self- harm.

But Tony Abbott's attack on the government at a morning news conference didn't go as smoothly as he'd hoped.
