Dexus confirms interest in Collins St site

Dexus has confirmed it is in talks to buy 80 Collins Street in Melbourne, a development precinct owned by the Queensland government's investment arm, QIC.

Property giant Dexus has confirmed it is close to a deal for a commercial precinct in the heart of Melbourne, following media reports the company will spend $1.4 billion for the Collins Street site.

The listed real estate developer told the ASX on Thursday morning it was in talks to buy 80 Collins Street, a development precinct owned by the Queensland government's investment arm, QIC.

"While Dexus does not usually comment on media reports, given the nature of the articles it confirms that it is in the early stages of exclusive due diligence to acquire 80 Collins Street, Melbourne alongside capital partners," the company said in a release.

Media reported Dexus had beat off competitors, including Charter Hall and Mirvac, for the under-construction office tower, a proposed hotel and an up-market retail and restaurant complex.

The site can be found in what is often referred to as the "Paris end" of Melbourne's corporate strip.

Dexus shares dipped 0.7 per cent in the first 15 minutes of trade on Thursday to $12.68.
