Digital record links Anzac to children

A former Victorian premier says establishing a personal link to Anzac Day will help the next generation remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Australian children must feel personally connected to the Anzac spirit if they are to carry the torch into the future, a former Victorian premier says.

With Anzac Day a week away, a permanent digital time capsule has been set up in Melbourne's CBD so people can share their Anzac Day stories online.

Former premier Ted Baillieu, who heads the Victorian Anzac Centenary Committee, said Anzac Day was at the heart of all Australians and sharing stories digitally would help to educate children about those who fought in the Great War.

"Kids will walk past a sculpture, they'll walk past a photograph but they'll never let go of a connection that's permanent," he told reporters on Thursday.

"If you can make it personal for them then they will pick up the torch and carry it into the future."

The Federation Square digital time capsule is an ongoing project which seeks to collect hundreds of stories, from the tales of ex-servicemen to children's experiences in memorial marches, a spokeswoman said.

Mr Baillieu said the time capsule also provides an important link to the 5000 Poppies project which will be displayed at Federation Square to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing in 2015.
