Diplomat accused of hitting wife leaves US

A German diplomat has left the United States after being accused of hitting his wife.

The US government says Germany has refused to waive immunity of a diplomat accused of hitting his wife.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner says the US last month asked Germany to drop the immunity for Joachim Haubrichs so he could be prosecuted in the United States.

He says Germany rejected the request, and Haubrichs and his wife have since returned to Germany.

New York prosecutors believed there was sufficient evidence to convict Haubrichs of misdemeanour assault for hitting his wife in the face. Haubrichs worked at Germany's mission to the United Nations.
