Foreign Minister Julie Bishop's tour of Tasmania with foreign ambassadors cost Australian taxpayers more than $125,000.

There were 81 ambassadors and high commissioners and 37 spouses on the three-day trip in late April.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed in a Senate estimates hearing on Friday that the diplomats had to pay for their own flights and accommodation.

Officials said the visit was designed to showcase Tasmanian tourism, business and culture.

Diplomats were briefed on Tasmania's economy and position as a gateway to Antarctica.

They also visited Launceston's Cataract Gorge.

The $126,000 price tag included transport costs, food, alcohol and entertainment.

There was a formal dinner at Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart and a lunch hosted by Tasmania Premier Will Hodgman at Frogmore Creek Winery.

Ms Bishop has previously hosted similar trips in Western Australia and South Australia.
