A diver has been killed by a shark off Cull Island, near Esperance, in Western Australia.

The Department of Primary Industries confirmed the fatal shark bite occurred about 1pm local time on Sunday.

"A man received fatal injuries after being bitten by a reported white shark," the department said.

WA Police said the man was diving from a boat when he was attacked.
Esperance Police and Marine Rescue WA are searching the ocean for the victim's body.

"A woman who was on board the boat at the time of the incident has been returned to shore and has been taken by St John Ambulance to hospital," police said.

She was suffering from shock.

Authorities have warned swimmers to take additional caution in the Cull Island area and to report any shark sightings.
