High profile Australians and experts are split on the issue of population growth in Australia. In 2010 Prime Minister Gillard stepped back from predecessor Kevin Rudd's vision of a 'big Australia' in favour of a 'sustainable' population.Some experts predict at this rate, the number of people living in Australia will exceed 35 million by 2056. Australian entrepreneur Dick Smith has referred to Australia's population growth as an 'ongoing' disaster' saying the federal government needs to acknowledge that Australia cannot sustain 'perpetual growth in a finite world'.

Chris Richardson from Deloitte Access Economics is in favour of a bigger Australia, saying the country needs it to sustain its economic growth.
