Brisbane list manager David Noble said the Lions have had an open and amicable discussion with Fremantle about Lachie Neale.

Brisbane remain upbeat about their chances of landing Lachie Neale, despite Fremantle's determination to retain the star AFL midfielder.

The Lions and Dockers opened negotiations on Monday and Neale's fate will be one of the big stories in the trade period.

"It's great that someone like Lachie, his calibre, has indicated he wants to (come) to our club," said Brisbane football boss David Noble.

"We'll certainly do everything we can to get him there.

"The discussions were pretty amicable ... it was just an open discussion."

Neale won his second club best and fairest award on Saturday night and said in his acceptance speech that he was unsure about where he would play next season.

"We'd love to keep him and in day three in my role as footy manager it would be a feather in my cap if he stayed so that's what we're working towards," Fremantle's Peter Bell said.

GWS ruckman Rory Lobb has also nominated Fremantle as his preferred club, while the Dockers are courting Melbourne key forward Jesse Hogan.

Hogan toured Fremantle's facilities last week, but is yet to confirm that he wants a return to his home stage.

"We spent a bit of time with him and the appeal of Jesse Hogan is obvious," Bell said.

"He's a quality player and he's only 23 years old, but there are a lot of complicating factors.

"We haven't had any further information at this stage."
