A manipulated video appearing to show Joe Biden forget the state he was in during a rally was viewed more than one million times before it was removed from social media.
“Hello Minnesota,” the 77-year-old says in the false video, as he walks on to a stage where signs read “Tampa, Florida” and “Text FL to 30330”.
The footage of Mr Biden walking on stage is real and it did take place in Minnesota. However, the words on the signs behind him were manipulated to suggest he was in Florida at the time.
An Associated Press analysis noted other contextual clues, including Mr Biden wearing a thick coat for Minnesota’s cold climate. At the rally in warmer Tampa on 29 October, Mr Biden only wore a suit jacket.
The video was shared on Twitter by a user who accused the Democratic candidate of forgetting what state he was in. The false footage received more than 1.1 million views in less than 24 hours.
Twitter later tagged the video as “manipulated media” and it was subsequently removed from the user's profile.
While there is no confirmed link between the user who posted the video and the Trump campaign, the president has repeatedly drawn on his opponent’s perceived diminished mental state, who he refers to as “Sleepy Joe”.
Various other videos shared on social media have showed Mr Biden appearing to stumble over his words and seeming dazed and forgetful.
In March, Mr Trump retweeted a manipulated video that falsely appeared to show Mr Biden endorsing Mr Trump for re-election during a Missouri appearance.
In September, an edited video that falsely showed Mr Biden mixing up the words to the Pledge of Allegiance received hundreds of thousands of views.
