The health care of asylum seekers will be the focus of an Australian Medical Association forum to be held in Sydney.

Doctors, nurses and other health workers will gather on Sunday to call for the immediate removal of infants and children from detention centres.

"(The forum will) focus on the mental and physical harms caused by immigration detention," the AMA said in a statement.

The association has also urged the government to let an independent panel of medical experts oversee and report on the health of asylum seekers in detention.
