Former Australian of the Year Mick Dodson has been appointed to a key role at Harvard University.
The indigenous rights advocate is expected to spend eight to 12 months based in Massachusetts next year, where he will be chair of Australian Studies at Harvard.
Professor Dodson's tenure falls within the Indigenous Development Program at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

He will share the job with Dr Chris McAuliffe from the University of Melbourne, and remain director of the Australian
National University's National Centre for Indigenous Studies.
"This is a great honour for me, and a great opportunity to showcase some of the research being done here at the National Centre for Indigenous Studies at ANU, as well as elsewhere in Australia," Professor Dodson said in a statement.
"It will also be a good opportunity to find out more about some of the work being done in the US that I can bring back to Australia."
