A young boy has been mauled in the face by a dog in Sydney's southwest.

The dog attacked the seven-year-old boy in the backyard of a Leppington home just before 4pm, police say.

He was taken to The Children's Hospital at Westmead in a stable condition.

The dog was reportedly a bullmastiff owned by the boy's uncle.
