American bulldog Brooklyn will not be chasing wombats down holes again any time soon, says his relieved NSW owner.

Charlie Griffin is soon to be reunited with his adventurous pooch, who spent three days stuck underground after chasing a wombat into its hole near Nowra on the state's south coast.

The 42-kilogram pooch is spending several days recuperating at the local RSPCA before he will be back permanently with Mr Griffin.

Vets say Brooklyn came out of his ordeal relatively unscathed, being treated only for dehydration and some grazes, believed to be the result of an earlier run-in with a wombat.

"Brooklyn will be put in a no wombat go zone, I think," Mr Griffin told the Seven Network.

"That's all there is to it; no more wombats for Brooky."

Mr Griffin thanked Nowra community members who came to Brooklyn's aid, spending seven hours digging him out of the ground after official search and rescue crews gave up hope.

"All I can say to everyone is thank you very much. I'm forever in your debt," he said.
