Western Bulldogs recruit Travis Cloke will take an indefinite break from the AFL to deal with unspecified mental health issues.

The 30-year-old has played six games and been dropped twice this year after crossing from Collingwood in the off-season.

"Travis is very appreciative of how the club and his teammates have supported him and he will continue to take part in the training program as he manages the issue," a club statement read.

"A potential return to play date is undetermined at this stage."

Cloke played 246 games with the Pies, including the 2010 premiership, and took out the club's leading goal kicker award on four occasions.

He sought a fresh start after being dropped by Nathan Buckley three times last season.

It hasn't been a smooth transition for the key forward who has managed just six goals for the reigning premiers who have also struggled to a 6-6 record.

Cloke's former teammate Alex Fasolo took time out from playing to deal with a mental health issue in early June, but returned after missing one game.
