Domain the jewel in Fairfax's crown

Spinning off Domain would strip Fairfax Media of its best earner, but the slimmed down company would still have plenty of high-profile assets.

FAIRFAX MEDIA'S KEY ASSETS

* DOMAIN

The real estate classifieds business has been Fairfax's best performer for a while. It generated 39 per cent of total earnings in the first half of 2016/17, even as Domain's earnings fell because of the cost of investments and a drop in listings. Fairfax says a spin off of Domain will allow it to realise its full potential.

* METROPOLITAN MEDIA

Ad revenue for the business that includes The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Australian Financial Review plummeted 16.6 per cent in the half year. Circulation inched up almost one per cent due to digital subscription growth, and Fairfax says it is committed to print media for some years yet.

* AUSTRALIAN COMMUNITY MEDIA

The printer of rural and regional newspapers was hit by significant declines in circulation and ad revenue, and was further dented by exits from some unprofitable titles and changes to publishing schedules.

* NEW ZEALAND MEDIA

Revenue declined nine per cent and the unit's merger with NZME is currently before the NZ competition watchdog.

* STAN

Following the demise of Presto, Stan is further entrenched as the leading local Netflix rival. It passed 700,000 active subscribers last week and Fairfax says its streaming joint venture with Nine Entertainment is on a clear path to profitability, with cashflow breakeven expected during 2017/18.
