Domestic violence trial targets offenders

The South Australian state government has announced a $4 million domestic violence initiative, including the trial to remove perpetrators from homes.

A trial that removes domestic and family violence perpetrators from homes will commence in South Australia under a new $4 million initiative from the state government.

Human Services Minister Michelle Lensink announced the trial on Saturday, which is part of an initiative that includes 40 new crisis accommodation beds.

She said families needed to remain in the comfort of their homes.

"It's better to take the perpetrator out of the home so families are not relocated from schools, services and support that they need," Ms Lensink said.

"We want to make sure perpetrators are accountable, know where they are and make sure the families are safe."

Domestic violence prevention assistant minister Carolyn Power said the initiative was crucial in addressing domestic and family violence.

"(The trial) is an exciting first here in South Australia," Ms Power said.

"To be ripped out of your home and local community is a traumatic experience."

Domestic violence advocate Glyn Scott said the removal of perpetrators should have happened years ago.

Her eldest son was murdered and her second committed suicide because of domestic abuse.

"If the perpetrator was made accountable at that time when this happened to me, my eldest two children would still be alive," Ms Scott said.

"If they leave the family home, women face being on the run, homeless, living in cars and having the threat of losing their children because of that."

The new crisis beds include units, refurbished and newly-built properties.

Seventy-five per cent will be delivered by the end of the year, and the remaining 25 per cent by the end of April 2020.
