Victoria's political donation laws might need updating but the opposition leader doesn't think banning donations will work.
An Ombudsman's report has recommended the state overhaul political donation laws, but Liberal leader Mathew Guy said any changes shouldn't focus on just one group.
"I don't think you can ban one section of the community, I don't think that works. Define a developer? What if it's their wife, what if it's their cousin?" Mr Guy told reporters on Thursday.
Mr Guy said the Liberal Party was looking at changing political donation laws with the potential for a new policy to take to the next election.
But Premier Daniel Andrews says the government has no plans to change the laws.
"We'll have a look at the Ombudsman's report and the recommendations that are made but at this stage we have no plans to change what are a rigorous set of electoral laws," Mr Andrews told reporters.
Mr Andrews said any changes to laws needed to be nationally consistent.
Ombudsman Deborah Glass said Victoria was one of the least regulated for political donations in the western world.
