Tony Abbott is not good enough to be prime minister of Australia, deputy Labor leader Anthony Albanese says.
He says the campaign for the September 7 election will expose the opposition leader's lack of policies.
"You can't get through a campaign just saying no, no, no. He'll have to come up with a policy eventually," Mr Albanese told the Nine Network on Monday.
"He might have been a good Opposition Leader Tony Abbott - there's no doubt about that - but he's not up to being prime minister."
Mr Albanese said Labor had what was needed to win government on September 7, with its policies on the economy, education, the national disability care scheme and the national broadband network.
"We've very confident that our positive plans for the future will be contrasted with Mr Abbott and his negativity."
The latest Newspoll shows a drop in support for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, but Mr Albanese says Labor isn't giving up.
"We start off the election campaign slightly behind but we are competitive," he said.
He also hit out at the Daily Telegraph's front page headlined "Kick This Mob Out", saying the paper's readers deserved better.
"That's an extraordinary intervention on day one of an election campaign."
