Nick Xenophon wants to help former treasurer Joe Hockey "fulfil his dream" of ending the age of entitlement by rejecting his pension if he is appointed ambassador to the United States.

The independent senator has called on Mr Hockey not to "double dip" and to reject his parliamentary pension while he collects the $330,000 salary for the ambassador role.

Senator Xenophon told reporters in Adelaide on Sunday if Mr Hockey doesn't co-operate, he'll draft a bill to stop politicians collecting their pensions while taking up diplomatic posts.
