Don't open FOI floodgates of woe: senator

The federal government has slammed a bid to tweak Freedom of Information laws warning it could result in processing delays.

The federal government says forcing its departments to publish reasons for granting or rejecting Freedom of Information requests would open the "flood gates of administrative woe".

A private bill proposed by Labor senator Joe Ludwig proposes departments disclose the exact wording of each request to increase transparency.

But government senator David Johnston has told parliament Labor wants to impose a massive administrative burden on departments which would result in significant processing delays.
