Doolan named Ricky Ponting medallist

Tasmania's most prestigious cricketing award, the Ricky Ponting Medal, has gone to batsman Alex Doolan.

Tasmania's first-class opening batsman Alex Doolan has won the state's prestigious Ricky Ponting Medal.

With a 2016-17 Sheffield Shield season highlighted by an unbeaten 202-run knock against Western Australia in November, Doolan topped the tally of votes from fellow players and coaches, across all formats of the game.

"It's a huge honour to win anything in Ricky's name," Doolan said.

The 31-year-old added that former Australian captain Ponting had been an inspiration to him as a young player.
