The death toll from bomb blasts in Uganda as people watched the World Cup final has risen to 64, police say.

Bombs exploded at two sites in Kampala during the football match between Spain and the Netherlands on Sunday night.

The deadliest attack occurred at a rugby club as people watched the game on a large-screen TV outdoors.

The second blast took place at an Ethiopian restaurant.

The US embassy has said one American national was among those killed in the attacks.

Police Chief Kale Kayihura said he believed al-Shabab, Somalia's most feared militant group, could be responsible.

Al-Shabab has pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda.

Kaihura earlier put the death toll between 23 and 30, but a police official on site said the toll had risen to 64.
