Ethnic violence has struck coastal southeastern Kenya, with members of a pastoralist tribe attacking their farming neighbours in the early hours of the morning.
A Kenyan Red Cross official said the group had encountered 59 bodies, although authorities initially reported 48 deaths.
Around 2-300 armed members of the Pomoko tribe attacked Orma villagers in the Tana River district, in what was thought to be a revenge attack over the deaths of three Pomoko at the hands of Orma people ten days earlier.
The dispute is thought to centre around the grazing rights for cattle - deadly violence was dished out between the groups in 2001, with access to a river the source of the tension.
