Dragon boats race into the new year

Dragon boat racers took to Sydney's Darling Harbour on Saturday as part of lunar new year celebrations, SBS' Cassandra Hill reports.

Dragon boats are long wooden craft, powered by 20 rowers each.

Every year, clubs and organisations from around Sydney participate in races to celebrate the lunar new year.

Paralympian and Chinese New Year Ambassador Lindy Hou helped kick off this year's race, drawing eyeson suclpted, colourful dragon heads that adorn the boats.

Dragon boat racing is a traditiondating back 2000 years in China, which first arrived in Australia 30 years ago and has been increasing in popularity each year.
