Dramatic footage shows typhoon Hato smashing into Hong Kong, southern China

Dramatic videos show pedestrians thrown to the ground, trees being uprooted, floodwaters smahing into buildings and monster waves sweeping through affected cities.

Typhoon Hato smashed southern China and Hong Kong with hurricane-force winds and heavy rains, killing ten people.

Videos from the worst-hit cities show the level of force and destruction of the storm.

The typhoon coincided with high tides, meaning an abnormally high sea level rise.

In some area, waves reached as high as 10 metres.
Local news service, Hong Kong Free Press, shared this video of a car trying to cross a bridge during the typhoon.
This footage shows a huge wave breaking through the glass door of a building near the beach.
This spinning crane shows the force and speed of the winds.
