Celebrities are weighing in on the great dress debate as it trends online in countries around the world.

The dress, originally posted to Tumblr, caused a social media frenzy when people started reporting it as different colours.

Some saw white and gold while others saw it as blue and black.

At 2.30pm (AEDT) #whiteandgold, #TheDress, #dressgate, and #blueandblack were the top four Australian trends on Twitter.

Hashtags related to the dress were also the top four in the UK and #TheDress took out the top spot in the US.
Celebrities were not immune to the intrigue.

Taylor Swift was firmly in the blue and black team.
"I don't understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it's a trick somehow.

"I'm confused and scared," she said on Twitter.

"PS it's OBVIOUSLY BLUE AND BLACK."
Julianne Moore was in the white and gold camp, which Mindy Kaling thought was "insane".
"IT'S A BLUE AND BLACK DRESS! ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME," said Kaling.

"Dress controversy ... VIOLET and BLACK! Obvs" said James Franco."
The dress debate has all but broken the internet.
A Buzzfeed poll put 74 per cent of readers in the white and gold camp and 26 per cent in the blue and black.

Theories about the colour discrepancy range from it being dependent on the viewer's mood, to a more believable theory about retina differences and light levels.
