Four days after a hit-and-run left a teenage girl fighting for life, a driver has been charged with fleeing the Melbourne crash scene.
The 41-year-old woman from Sunshine North was charged on Thursday after she handed herself into police.
Investigators say a BMW hatchback hit the girl who was riding her bike at Coburg on Sunday. The car allegedly drove off from the crash scene.
The woman has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, failing to stop, failing to render assistance and failing to exchange details or report a collision.
"The public interest in this case ... has probably put her in a position where she had no choice (but to come forward)" Major Collision detective inspector Stuart McGregor said.
"She knew that we were going to name her. She knew that we were going to put her face out there and she knew that eventually we were going to come knocking on the door," he said.
Leaving a city police station, the woman covered her face with a leather jacket and had to be guided by a police officer to a waiting nearby sedan.
The girl who wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was hit while crossing the road at Bell and Sussex streets about 8pm.
She remains in an induced coma at the Royal Children's Hospital, with friends rallying behind her.
"Stay strong ... I know you can fight through this I love to bits (sic) I just hope u will be okay," one friend posted to Facebook.
The alleged hit-run driver is due to face Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Monday.
