Driver critical as pair die in NSW crash

A female driver has been airlifted to hospital and her two passengers have died after a collision with a truck in the Central West region of NSW.

Police are still working to formally identify two people who died in a fiery crash in the state's central west as the driver of the car they were travelling in fights for life in a Sydney hospital.

Emergency services were called out to the horror head-on between a truck and a car on The Gipps Way, 30km south of Condobolin, on Monday evening.

The 21-year-old woman driving the sedan was flown to Westmead Hospital where she's in a critical but stable condition, a spokeswoman told AAP on Tuesday.

Her two passengers, a man and a woman, died at the scene. Police are still working to formally identify the pair.

The 59-year-old truck driver managed to escape before his vehicle burst into flames. He was treated for minor injuries.

The road was reopened early on Tuesday after being closed in both directions for more than 12 hours.
