ASX-listed drone detection outfit DroneShield has unveiled a rifle-style handheld drone jammer, which the company boasts can help fight terrorism.
DroneShield's "DroneGun" can jam communications between a drone and its pilot and for some models can also track down the drone user. An optional GPS-jamming capability is also available to customers outside the US.
The recently-listed company, which develops sensors and software to acoustically detect drones, said on Monday that there is "substantial need" for the product because of an increase in drone use in terrorism in recent months.
DroneShield, which has offices in Sydney and in Virginia in the United States, cited reports of an Islamic State drone rigged with explosives that killed two Peshmerga fighters and wounded two French soldiers in Iraq over the past two months. IS has also used drones to release hand grenades against US-backed forces and during battlefield surveillance.
The company estimates that 12 million drones will be in use by 2020.
DroneShield shares closed 0.5 cents higher, or 2.6 per cent, at 20 cents, after jumping 7.7 per cent earlier in a lower trading session.
