The ex-wife of Lindt Cafe hostage-taker Man Haron Monis realised something was wrong in the moments before she was viciously murdered and tried in vain to escape, prosecutors believe.

Monis's then girlfriend Amirah Droudis, 37, is being tried by a judge alone in the NSW Supreme Court for the 2013 murder of the 30-year-old woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi QC told the court during his opening address on Monday that Droudis had allowed her victim into Monis's western Sydney unit block before stabbing her around 18 times, dousing her body in petrol and setting it alight.
